How did this happen?

As a result of the prolonged recession and spiking fuel prices, more and more customers are opting for expedited ground-based solutions instead of domestic air freighter service. 700 employees will no longer have jobs beginning September 1, 2011 because of our recession and the fuel prices.

How does this affect you?

One less Air Freighter means fewer options for main-deck service throughout North America. Premiums for air will go up and expect delays on services commitments. Of course, UPS and FedEx will continue to provide main deck service, but at a premium; and small package shipments represent the bulk of their business. Commercial Airlines have also reduced wide-body aircraft service to rural areas, with the exception of major hubs.

How to plan ahead:

I suggest you always back plan and expect the worse when dealing with Heavy Freight that is going via air, i.e. Next Day, 2 Day and 3 Day air. Keys to successful planning:

  • Have others plan in advance and check in with your Tour Managers, Production Managers, Project Managers and/or Logistics Operations, and ensure they consult with Xpeditious Unlimited (or your preferred carrier) for sound advice.

  • Use the week days to your advantage. For example, if you have a shipment leaving Los Angeles, CA for Newark, NJ on a Thursday, 90 % odds your gear will arrive Monday of the next week, and 10 % it will arrive Tuesday. Trucks moving LTL run Monday through Friday and over the weekend.

  • Other alternatives to main-deck service include using Commercial Airlines to book major hubs, and arranging exclusive truck runs for Shows, Demos and any other events that require expedited service.
